Question
I have a 6 gallon fluval edge aquarium.  I want to foster a planted aquarium.  the self contained lighting system is two 10 watt halogen bulbs.  the aquarium seems bright; but, is halogen a healthy 'form' of light?  Can I use plants requiring bright light?
thanks, so much

Answer
Dear John,
They are a very focused "spot-light" and they generate a lot of heat you may have too warm a temperature even for fishes. It wouldn't be surprising if the bulb warmed the temp to the upper nineties or even perhaps 100. It's always a problem to try to heat small bowls and such. I have used regular incandescent bulbs before with reasonable success but still it's not the best way and there still tend to be some temperature fluctuations. Halogen bulbs are actually great lighting in general. I think you might have to experiment with it carefully if you still want to try the bulb (distancing it far from the bowl) but try it at your own risk. Thanks. Good Luck.
