red aquarium water

Question
I have a 20 gallon tank with two 5 inch goldfish in it. I noticed a red open sore at the base of the dorsal fin. I treated it with tetracycline, 2 doses, changed 25% of the water, then 2 more doses. I also cleaned the tank and did a gravel wash and put in some mela-fix, and aquarium salt. The red sores cleared up right away, but now the tank is burgundy/dark red. It is foamy and has a lot of fine particulate matter in it, that are too fine for the filter to pick up. I use a whisper 30 filter with bio-bags. I removed the activated charcoal before medicating. The fish are doing well and eating normally. How do I get rid of the red water? It seems to be getting worse.

Answer
Hi Jeff,
Definitely the best solution is to do daily 30-50% water changes until your water clears up. These water changes will not harm the fish nor the biofilter and will be very beneficial to get all that chemical residue out and all. Carbon filtration will also help remove discolorations, odors, and some pollutants in the water. Just try not to depend on it entirely.

Best wishes and happy holidays!
