Question
hi i have a tropical tank with guppies and Mollies i bought a guppy pregnant the other week 1 gave birth in the tank(i didn't know this one was pregnant) and most of the fry have been eaten unfortunately the other i caught in time and put her in the breeding net( i now have guppy fry!) now i think my Mollies are pregnant but I'm not sure and i don't want the fry to be eaten like the guppies question 1:how do you tell if the Mollies are pregnant question 2: will guppy fry and molly fry be ok in the same breeding net?

Answer
Hi Kai,
Surprisingly enough, whenever I breed mollies, I leave the mother fish in the main aquarium and simply supply plenty of floating plants (either live or fake) as well as jungles on plants in the back corners of the tank and many fry do survive just fine this way. This method also prevents stress on the female molly when she normally would be moved around and netted which makes her very prone to delivering too early or possibly getting too stressed and dying.

Most female mollies are pregnant all the time so you can automatically assume that they will deliver fry soon. You'll know because their bellies will steadily grow large and round.

You can always keep the tank well planted and watch the tank closely for fry and when they do appear, use your net to gather them into your breeder net. I prefer this way rather than moving the adult fish and stressing her a lot. I can bet that if you have enough hiding nooks and crannies you will end up with many molly fry. Keep in mind molly fry are larger than guppy fry and therefore are less likely to be eaten as well. I think both molly fry and guppy fry will  be OK together in the breeder net.

I hope this helps and best of luck!
Karen~
