Question
We have a 4 foot tank with approx 15 fish in it. They have become very lathargic and have a 'white spot'rash all over them. They are also floating at the surface of the water or lying on their sides on the bottom of the tank.  A few also have problems with their fins - they look like they are falling apart.  They have been treated for white spot and have been given aquarium salts. Please help. Thanks, Lucy

Answer
HI Lucy:  You have a toxic tank.  You need to change at least 50% of the water twice this week and it would be beneficial to have your water chemistry tested.  Most aquarium stores will test your water for free.  Just take them about a cup or so of water.  The poor water quality is cuasing most of your issues...but now disease has set in as well.  You are going to have to add ammonia remover to your tank while you treat the fish for their sickness.  It sounds like you have an ICH infestation as well as a fungal issue running rampant at the same time.  The temperature in the tank is going to have to be raised to at least 80 degree, continue with the aquarium salt and add the ICH medication (white spot) daily per its instruction.  additionally dose the tank with malafix every other to day to help with the fungal issues.  The tank water is going to have to be changed every other day during this process. Change a volume of water 20-30% each time.  Feed the fish... and feed the fish well... brine shrimp, tubiflex worms, and a quality fish food. You are also going to ahve to really clean the gravel... use a gravel vacume they cost about $12 at the local aquarium store.... please keep me posted.. dave
