Breeding balloon mollies

Question
How you do breed balloon mollies? How do you sex them and tell that they'll
pregnant?

Answer
Hey Kasandra,
To breed them, literally all you need is a male and a female. they will breed on their own and need little encouragement. A good food to give them to make them want to breed is live brine shrimp. this will make them go nuts and they will definatly breed.

to tell apart a male and a female, look at the fins near their butt. if the fish has three fins, one in the middle and then two a little more on the sides next to each other, it is a female. If it has (what looks like) a single pointed fin that points toward its tail fin, it is a male. This can be confusing to distinguish, but this is the best way to describe it. I have gone to websites where the definitions make no sense, if you still need clarification feel free to ask.

to tell if they are pregnant is difficult and easy at the same time. if the female is really fat, she is pregnant. virtually, almost every female balloon molly at an adult age is pregnant. from mating once, a female can have up to six litters, and each litter can have upto sixty babies, but normally much less.
If the female developes black or white spots near her fins, this is a sign she is going to give birth soon. also, if she starts doing a weird swimming in place "shake" also called the shimmies, she will probably give birth within the week.

ADULTS EAT THEIR YOUNG!!!

either have a breeder container (the plastic ones work better than the nets because you can change their shape) or a seperate tank ready. it is still a good idea to have the plastic container anyway. make sure it is the one with the holes on the bottom and extra pieces, not just a plastic box.
If you decide to get a seperate tank (i recommend a 5 or 10 gallon. This works much better than trying to keep them in the big tank...I have had a lot more live to adulthood)
make sure it has a heater and don't put a filter in until they are six weeks old. keep the temp at around 75-80 degrees.

i hope all of this info helps you out! good luck with the future babies!
best wishes, chelsey
