Pregnant Platy, when shall I put into trap?

Question
Hi Chris,

I have a pregnant platy in my tank. Its a species tank, so it only consists of
platies; 3 male and 3 female. Yesterday I went out and bought a breeding
trap, not the best way to breed platies I know, but my parents won't let me
get another tank. I was just wondering when should I put her into the trap?
Do pregnant platies have a strange behaviour just before they give birth? Or
are there any signs I need to look out for? I definitely know she's pregnant,
she's got a dark gravid spot and she's quite plump. Thanks

Sam

Answer
There are a couple of clues you can look for that can tell you it will be less than a week before delivery. Her belly may develop a "boxy" look to it. It will be kind of flattish on the sides and bottom. She will also hide more, usually near the bottom of the tank. The babies are usually born in the early morning before dawn. Just watch her and she will show signs of readiness eventually as her behavior changes a little. Just be sure to make 25% water changes in your tank at least once a week. Once the babies come your tank will quickly become overcrowded as they grow up.
