Question
QUESTION: I have a white molly that has not been too active and i assumed that she was near ready to give birth as she was keeping to herself in the bottom of the tank.  I put her in a Breeders box and have been keeping an eye on her.  she has not popped ant babies but i have notices she has has a long white and transparent membrane in the breeder box with her.  I am not sure what it is as i am new to fish keeping.  can you help me?

ANSWER: Hi Tressa,
Your Molly should give birth in less than a week. How large is her belly? If she looks healthy, then just keep her in the breeding box. The babies can be fed powdered flakes, cooked egg yolk, and baby brine shrimp.

You said that she was lying near the bottom. This is usually normal, however, if her scales are sticking out, and she looks bloated, she may have a disease called dropsy. Check out this link for more info:

Since you are new to keeping Mollies, why don't you check out this link?

If there are males in the tank, it's most likely she is pregnant, and not sick. I hope your new fish fry turn out well!

Best wishes to you Molly!

http://www.facebook.com/editphoto.php?aid=242380#/photo.php?pid=6562992&id=79625 it looks like some kind of membrane that she is passing through her birth canal.  i don't know what to make of it let me know if you can see the pics

Answer
Hi Tressa,
I can't access the pictures, but I know what you're talking about. The fry that are in her stomach will in fact look membrane-like, and this should be normal. During birth, she will become a bit stressed. However, if she is TOO stressed, she may have an 'abortion', and the dead fry may be passing through, though this is not likely.

I wouldn't worry too much, since this is your first brood - your Molly can give birth every three months! Just keep checking for signs of stress or disease, but chances are, she will give birth in less than a week.

Best wishes to your Molly!
