Question
One of my Danios has begun to struggle to swim upright, body drifting below head height and resting a lot on its side.  His spine is curving downwards too.  I had another do something similar, then die, about a year ago. I've isolated him. What is he suffering from and how can I treat him?

Answer
HI Sarah,
Sorry about your danios having problems. How long have you had them? Their life expectancy is around two years and if they have been under any stress from water conditons or other fish it can be less. If your fish is beginning to get old then that would explain the curving of his spine.
If none of this applies to your fish then possibly he has swim bladder problems. You could try feeding him a small bit of a green pea with the shell removed. Sometimes this helps. Don't overfeed at this point. Make sure his tank water is clean and doesn't get an ammonia build up since this is very hard on them. You could also try using some Melafix in the water. I don't know the size of the tank he is in but adjust the amount according to your tank size.
If he isn't getting old then maybe this will help. It is very hard and tricky to treat symptoms such as these, but with a little luck sometimes I have had good success with this treatment.
Best of luck.
Hope this has helped,
Karen
