Betta with torn fins

Question
Hi Jaymie, my male betta Ace has torn fins and I'm pretty sure that its because theres plastic plants in his one gal home. He also has a 1 gal filter but I'm not sure if thats also causing his torn fins. I dont think that its fin rot though because they dont seem to be getting any worse, they just stay the same length torn, but for now I do have the filter off and I'm also thinking about taking out the plastic plants and replacing them with fabric ones. So Jaymie, do you have any secrets on how to cure torn betta fins, any advice would be most appreciated. Thank You. :)

Answer
Blake,

Torn fins will start to regrow. Plastic plants do tend to injure the male Betta's. If he is in a 1 gallon, there is no room for plants or the filter. With Betta's, filters are not needed. I would however think about moving him to a larger tank. They do quite well in 5 gallon tanks all by themselves. You can give him a salt water bath. This will help the torn fins.

In a one gallon container, dissolve 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt. Make sure it is dissolved completely before you put him in the water. Let him swim around for 15 minutes then return him to his tank. Make sure you stay with him the whole time he is in the salt water in case something happens and you need to remove him. I would do this twice a day for a week. Make sure the salt water is made fresh every time. Never use the same water twice. Also make sure the salt water is the same temp as the tank water. We don't want him to go into shock. You did not mention a heater. Betta's are tropical fish and need their water to be at 82 degrees at all times. The colder water could hinder the fins from growing back. Let me know how things are going in a few days.
