Minnows are not for goldfish

Question
Hello Karen,
As you told me i without a second thought added White Cloud Mountain Minnows to my Gold Fish tank and the next morning i was shocked to find only one remaining out of 6. I then saw that one of my ryuikin had a tail out of its mouth. My money had gone a total waste. But my cory, is going on pretty well with the gold fish fry. I dont know if this can happen but my German ram and Blue morph have been breeding yesterday and how can i expect my fry to be? The Blue morph(Female) has died.

Answer
Srinivas,
I AM SO SORRY that happened.... You said you wanted a different fish to go with your goldfish and the only fish I could find while doing research was the highly recommended White clouds. I've heard of other people keeping goldfish with white clouds and they have had no problems. Though I myself have only kept goldfish-with goldfish. White clouds are the most highly recommended species for goldfish tanks and never was there a word about the goldfish eating the minnows.... Unfortunately your goldfish were probably very large and the minnows very small. Your Goldies considered the white clouds a great live food to snack on. Not that I am blaming you but you must take much thought into the size of the current fish when you are adding a new species. Even fish that seem to have small mouths can open up wide and gulp in fish you wouldn't dream of them eating.

You are right, Minnows are not for Goldfish, goldfish likely grow too large to eat them. Goldfish do best with goldfish, or your cory! Anyway, Please take my much sympathetic apologies...I didn't mean for that to happen at all.... I'm sorry...

~Now about your German Rams breeding~
Congratulations on getting your rams to spawn!! :-)
In normal instances both male and female blue rams will share in caring for the fry, it has been reported that the parents may take the babies in their mouth to protect them like a mouthbrooder. I am not sure how your situation will go with just the male fish, he may or may not take over for the female whom fans the eggs until they hatch which occurs in 60-72 hours.
Which by the way, sorry that your female died. The male ram might have been an aggressive one, that happens sometimes.
When feeding the fry, newly hatched brine shrimp or extremely finely powdered flake food is said to work with the babies, Micro worms are another possibility.
After the fry hatch in about 60 hours, they are moved about in shallow depressions made by the spawners, becoming free swimming in about 4 days.
Usually, you can remove the fry to a grow-out tank after they are about 8 weeks old.

I hope I helped! If you need anymore info or have more questions, please email me again. Once again, I am sorry for your White cloud problem...and your Blue morph ram . But anyway,
~Here's wishing you the very best of luck with your Ram fry!

Have a wonderful day, take care!
Happy fishkeeping!
Karen~
