ammonia remover

Question
My tank is 2 gallons with only 2 fish. I have a undergravel filter. The ammonia levels are a little high while pH is 7.2 and nitrite is around 30. I change 25% of my water every 5 days. I would like to know what type of ammonia remover I should get. For example: top fish, arm guard, etc. I would also like to know if there is anything else I should do and my male fish seems to be suffering from ammonia poisining. He has lost his ability to move his tail and i would like to know if there is anything I could do for him. Thank you

Answer
Hi Kevin;

Ammonia binders are not going to solve the problem because  they don't lower nitrite. The ammonia is probably going down anyway as the nitrite comes up if your tank is still in the break-in period. You should be changing water EVERY DAY right now to keep the ammonia and nitrite low enough that it doesn't kill the fish. The daily changes are the best way to help your sick one. Replace 25% or more daily until it is safe. If your tank is still in the break-in period it needs up to a total of 8 weeks to finish getting through. Keep making those changes until it finishes. You didn't mention what kind of fish you have. Hopefully you have little guys in there that don't get more than an inch long as adults. I hope your fish feel better soon. Let me know if you need more help...
