That is difficult to specifically determine because there are thousands of cichlid species and some are primarily vegetarian like many of the african species, and some are highly carnivorous such as the Jaguar Cichlid. However, many commonly available cichlid species like Severums, Firemouths, green terrors ect, are omnivorous... accepting flake, pellet, frozen, freeze dried, and tablet foods in both protein-rich meaty form and vegetable-based form.

So the best answer to that is to know your species of cichlid really well. Research about what they would eat in the wild and duplicate that as best as possible. Even with some vegetarian fish, variety is often the most important thing. Keeping a good balance between vegetarian-type foods and meaty-type foods is adequate for many. There are fortunately many types of pelleted and flake food formulated as a "complete" diet that covers many of the commonly available cichlid species and works wonderfully well as a staple to be supplemented occasionally with 'greeny' type foods and some frozen worms or shrimp every so often.

But again, it depends on the species. Research is the best thing you could do.
