Windex on aquarium

Question
I have a 180 gallon glass aquarium which was sitting for a long time and had filth on it which is very hard to get off -- I put windex on a nakin and wiped a small circle to see if it would come off -- I really can only drain the tank because of its size -- Is this going to be a problem and kill all the fish forever? What can I do to make up for this?  Also, any ideas how i can get this filth off? I scrub and scrub to no avail ?

I would appreciate any help

Thanks,

Matt

Answer
Hello,

Do you mean that you used Windex to clean the inside of your aquarium? If so, this is quite bad. Windex can make your ammonia levels skyrocket. If you can't drain the tank (which I completely understand) begin daily water changes of 10% with regular monitoring of your ammonia and nitrite levels.

To get the gunk off, there are a couple things you can try. There are some steel wool wrapped sponges that work quite well- just make sure they aren't the kind that have soap in them or that will scratch glass. You may also want to try a razor blade, which you can use to CAREFULLY scrape off the gunk.

I hope this helps.
