Question
Hi!
About 3 weeks ago, my guppies were pregnant and gave birth to 7 frys. But recently, 2 of them have died. pH levels are fine, there is no algae or bacteria in the water, and I am not overfeeding. The thing is, only one dies after the other the other day!!! What's happening and how can I help/stop this and prevent it in the future?

Should I add some API Stress Coat for them?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
Hi Gen,
Can you test your water quality for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?

For the best fish health, these levels should be as follows-
Ammonia-0
Nitrite-0
Nitrate - 10 or less

Its not uncommon to lose a few fry due to factors that are out of your control such as perhaps they were the weakest fish out of the brood or their systems never fully developed. But it never hurts to investigate just in case.

Its hard to prevent losing at least a few fry out of every batch. But the best thing you can do is maintain as high water quality as you can through daily 30% water changes (which will cause a growth spurt too!) and offering 5-6 small meals a day rather than just one or two large meals.

I don't think there is anything seriously wrong with your fish. I don't feel you should add the API Stress Coat to the water (unless when adding new water). Just do a few extra water changes and your fish will be fine.

I hope this helps and best of luck!
Susan~
