Sick betta-trying to ?!

Question
Hello,
I had 2 female bettas in a community tank. One kept hanging out in the corner behind the filter. Under advice I moved them to their own 1 gal. tank. Now the same betta is either laying on top of the filter, completely out of water, or trying to get on top of any foliage and have her head out of the water.  When she remains in the water she is plastered against the filter and upside down.  I also noticed that she is not eating. The other female bettas is fine.  Please help.

Answer
Hi Teri,
I don't know how long you have had her but bettas go through alot of bad water conditions before you even buy them. She could have some type of disease from bad water conditions even before you got her. Keep doing frequent water changes just to see if really clean water causes any improvement.Sometimes, some bettas just can't handle any water current. They will try to get away form it by hiding behind the filter. I have even taken a plant and stuck it in the outlet for my filter to slow it down and keep it from being too rough for some fish. The other problem could be that the other female is picking on her each time she comes out from her hiding area. Observe and see if that could be the problem. Sometimes even female bettas will be a little aggressive with each other. One thing you could try if you think she is really sick is to remove her into a seperate container and treat her with some Melafix. You would need to change her water at least every other day and use a really good water conditioner such as Amquel Plus which helps with ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. Hopefully, your betta isn't sick and it is just one of the things I have mentioned. I know I have had to try various different techniques with bettas. I would think that they were sick and I would move them to their own container and they would recover. I have been given some pretty sick acting bettas and they have recovered with just alot of water changes and making sure their water temperature was really warm--80F. They all have different personalities and sometimes they are not really sick. Best of luck!
Hope this helps,
Karen
