Question
Do you know of any macroalgaes that will grow in a cichlid tank? I know there are several types of marine macroalgaes but are there any tropical species? Thanks for your time and help!

Answer
Hi Jack,

Unfortunately, there aren't many macroalgaes that will survive in freshwater, much  less a cichlid tank.  I did find one, though: Batrachospermales  (Psilosiphon scoparium).  I have no idea what it looks like or where you can get it....  But it does live in freshwater!

The problem with plants in a cichlid tank is not only the fact that they're cichlids and consume anything that fits in their mouth, but the pH as well.  I'm assuming you're doing an african cichlid tank, with a proper pH of around 8.0.  One of the only plants that can survive in these conditions (and not be eaten due to its unpleasant taste) is Java Fern.  It's hard to stop Java Fern from flourishing, it's a wonderful plant.  I would suggest getting some of that and letting it attach itself (which it does very quickly, all you need is a rubber band to hold it in place temporarily) to decorations, holey/lace rock, tufa rock, wood, whatever.  If you're doing a south american cichlid tank, though, you'll want your pH around 6.5, and the Java Fern is still your best bet.  You may be able to get some Amazon Swords in with the south americans, but they'll surely be eaten.

I hope this helps, please let me know if there's anything else I can do for you!
