Question
Hi Jaymie,
I have a 1/2 gallon fish tank. Can you assist me to choose a fish for that? Is a male Siamese fighting fish (Betta) OK? or whatever you suggest. And also how to identify a good healthy one from the pet shop. And also other requirements for it. Thank you.

Answer
Isuru,

Unfortunately there is no fish that can be in that small of a tank. The Betta, needs a minimum of 2.5 gallons, but love to be in 5 gallons. The Betta is an awesome fish. I have been breeding them for awhile now. It is really hard to tell if the one you want is good since they keep them in such small cups. Make sure, if you get one that he is swimming around in that cup. No torn fins or tail, no white dots on him. Hopefully you can tell if his fins are clamped or not but if they are not extended, then chances are he isn't very healthy. They need a heater that is set at 82 degrees. That is one reason why a tank as small as yours will not work or him. 25% water changes are needed every 4 to 5 days. Yes they come from muddy water but they truly cannot live in that type of environment. You can pick up a 2.5 gallon tank at any fish store or Walmart. They come with lids too. If you do buy a Betta, please do not buy him from Walmart. If you have a family own pet store, I would get him there. Don't forget a water conditioner too for him to get rid of the bad stuff in the water. He will not need a filter.
