Betta Wont eat

Question
I recently bought a betta have now had him for about a week. I find that when I feed him he doesn't seem to be that interested in the food. I've tried flakes, he will grab a few of those and I've tried pellets, which he will only eat one or two of and seems to have a hard time swallowing them. I only feed him once a day. Is there soemthing possibly wrong with him? What is the usual ammount a betta will eat? And also, I know this is off topic, but can you suggest any good tankmates that would get along well with him? Thanks.

Answer
A few pellets is a good amount to feed him. You do not want to over feed him because betta's become constipated very easily. Depending on your tank size, you may want to mix Neon Tetra's with your male batta. They both have similar water chemistry needs and thrive in a tropical tank. For a 10 gallon tank house 6-8 Tetras with your one betta. It is important that you house that many Tetras because they are shoaling fish. Groups with less than 6 fish tend to suffer from stress which can lead to diseases. Pick out Tetras that look healthy in appearance and are active. Aim for the larger Tetras when purchasing, so the betta doesn't mistake him as food. Male bettas can never be mixed with each other. They will fight until death. Hope everything goes well.
