Question
iam a beginner in having a fish tank, I've had my tank running for about 1 month now but i have been miss informed about the cycle of my tank. I set up my tank and without knowing bought 7 fish and added them to my tank over about 2 days. They where all ok for about a week then they started acting strange in the tank and finally dying 1 by 1 now i have only 3 left. I've treated them for white spot because 2 of them where showing signs of it but iam now not sure wether that was the cause . I've done a water test and it showed very high levels of nitrate in the water. five done a 25% water change and going to test the water again tomorrow 12/10/07 my fish are really poorly is there anything else i should be doing to get the nitrite levels down to 0 iam reallystuck and need some advice i really don't want my fish to suffer because of my own mistakes thanks hope hear back soon

Answer
Hi Pete
So right now, what are your ph, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings?
What size is the tank?
And what kind of fish are the 3 that are left in there?

White spot-or ich as it's usually called, looks like someone sprinkled the fish with salt.  It's a common parasite, and usually shows up when fish are stressed-like when the tank is cycling.  So it's possible that's what was happening.

Let me know on those questions, you did a water change a few days ago, so that'll give me an idea of where you're at in the cycle process.
