African Cichlid with Popeye

Question
Hello,

One of my African Cichlids came up with what has to be popeye.  The next morning, she had this huge lump on her forehead that looked like a knot or something.  That day I put her in a hospital tank, did a major H2O change on my main tank, and began treating both with Maracyn-Two. Day 1 and 2 she did not eat and had very little energy.  I am on day 3 of treatment today and she is swimming around and ate very well, but the lump on her head looks like it might have burst...  After I gave her medicine today it turned from white, cotton-ish to bloody looking... Any idea of what this lump is/was and what is happening?  If so, is it related to popeye?  Do you think this was caused by Septicemia (the lump being an ulcer?).

P.S.  I take full responsibility for this issue as my fish have grown so large they really do need a much bigger tank.  This incident was reason enough to get one ordered!

Answer
Cysts are often secondary issues when dealing with Popeye.  It sounds like that is what she had and the medication caused it to burst (this is normal).  I would add some aquarium salt into the fish tank in the amount of 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons or water, this will help heal the cyst and stop any secondary infections.
