Question
QUESTION: i have a 29 gal tall tank that just set up for freshwater about 2 weeks ago ,it had an aquaclear 30  filter & i just also added  the petco power filter 65 - 2 days ago .  the tank is stocked with 6 angels, 6 tetra's ,2 dwarf pleco's  and a giant neon tetra , 4 baby( dime size) hatchet's .   my problem is  i am having a hard time keeping the water clear/clean , i am hoping  that my problem stems from it being a new tank  and  over stocking it from the get go. Do the filters just needing to catch up?  &  will the filter's ever catch up?  i am also treating the tank for ich with  just aquarium Salt and higher water temps (about 86 deg. )
Any help/advice would be great !
thanks in advance ...Ken

ANSWER: Hi Ken:  wow... that is way too many fish for a new tank.  I am surprised half of them have not died. If the cloudy water is a gray/white cloud then it is bacteria reproducing... and it is a good thing.  I would go down to the local aquarium store and buy a 8 oz box of CYCLE and dump the whole thing in your tank.  CYCLE is concentrated beneficial bacteria and it will probably save your fishes lives.  The water in your tank may also be toxic at this point so you will need to get the water tested as well.   Even established tanks will begin to cycle again if you add too many fish too fast.  For a 29 gallon tank I would never recommend adding more then five one inch fish at one time.  Dave

Hi Ken: I am just following up with you about your tank and its condition.  How are things going?  dave

QUESTION: Hi Dave , thanks for the fast reply ....my 29 gal tank is doing much better ,  everything has worked out just fine and  the cloudy water has cleared up ....no fish lost during the cycle . except for the two hatchets that jumped ship , ... but i have a bigger problem now with my 10 gal hosp tank.....its going through a bacteria Bloom i think .... and i can not seem to get it under control even with daily  15% partial water changes .  the Hosp tank has two blue rams  in it and 6 baby tetra's less than an inch long , i think they are called head and taillights fish, ......even after the water change the water seems to be cloudy again within 24 hrs ,   when i test the tank for ammonia , nitrates, and nitrites & PH  they all test within a good / safe range and i figured it would have cleared up  like the 29 gal. tank after its cycle ,,,,but it has not .  please Help  as i am scratching my head at this point .

Ken

Answer
Hi Ken: If the cloud is a blue/gray color it is just the bacteria reproducing.  Add some beneficial bacteria to the tank and cut back on the water changes. One 15% per week will be ok so long as the wahter chemistry is ok. If the water chemistry remains good then the tank will clear up shortly.  If it is not a blue/gray cloud then let me know... dave
