QuestionI have a 5 foot tank with tiger barbs in, a friend needed to rehome a parrot fish and a brown ciclid that I couldnt idnetify. Since then, the brown fish has changed into a bown and blue beautiful coloured fish and has been with the parrot fish constantly. The parrot fish has dug a pit and laid lot of eggs which they are both guarding, am I right in thinking because they are not the same type of fish, the eggs cant possibly hatch?
AnswerHi Louise
Blood Parrots are a hybrid between a Red Devil and a Gold Severum. There are many varying opinions about whether or not a pair could successfully breed. Often, a pair of Blood Parrots will mate and lay eggs but nothing would hatch. This is commonly believed to be because the male Parrot is sterile. However, there is a 50/50 of having a fertile female. Not knowing what the other type of fish is you have, I believe by the behavior you describe that you have a breeding pair and will likely see the eggs hatch.
Hope this helps, good luck!
