3 Pseudotropheus estherae in one tank

Question
Hey thank you for taking my question.   I have 3 of these fish in 30 gallon tank.  I used to have 4 in a 15 gallon and responses from here were that if i made enough hiding spots that it would be ok.  Well now i have 3 i gave one away to a friend.  I have 1 male and 2 female.  the orange female is the oldest but the male is the dominant one of the tank.  Now i feel that this tank is still not big enough for the size of these fish.  One of my females always hides because the male is extremely aggresive towards her.  But the other female, he is aggresive but in a courting way.  Should i remove the one that is being harrassed?  It is safe and fins are good but i want my tank to be safe and i feel bad for a fish that is probably stressed out.  I also have polynesian cone snails in the tank which multiply rapidly.  I would also like to know what i should do with them.  I could just kill them but i would feel a little bad.  Any suggestions?  my main concern is for the female fish who has to hide (all the time) because of the male.

Thanks,

Answer
Hi Brain,
as you have mentioned, I think perhaps a larger tank may be needed. Something like a 55gallon may be best in order for the fish to live more peacefully. And of course plenty of rockwork and hiding places. Perhaps try keeping a few extra females as well. You might try experimenting with removing the harassed female and see how the remaining cichlids do.

You could also try rearranging the rock work in the aquarium.

The best way to help control snail overpopulation is to make sure overfeeding does not occur.  Excess food in the gravel will fuel a population to complete overrun. So take extra care not to overfeed and vacuum the gravel a bit extra in the aquarium to remove the food and debris the snails are thriving on. With time, their numbers should subside. Although a few snails will likely remain, they aren't harmful when the numbers are kept in check. And they are actually beneficial for a clean-up crew.

I hope all goes well!
