My Beta has a tiny hole in his fin

Question
Hi Christy.  I have had my beta fish for about 6 months now.  I keep his water clean, changing it weekly and there is nothing in his bowl that he could cut himself on.  I noticed this afternoon that he has two small holes in one of his fins.  I was reading about fin and tail rot but do not think this is the problem as his water is never left dirty for long periods of time.  I am wondering if this problem will fix itself or if there is something I should do.

Thanks,
Nicole

Answer
Hi Nicole
How big is the bowl he's in?  If it's anything less then 5 gallons, you should be changing the water out more frequently then once a week.  Try increasing the water changes, if it's less then 1 gallon, I would change out 100% of the water every other day.  The water will look clean and crystal clear, but you won't see the ammonia building up.  You can also try adding some MelaFix or BettaFix(same thing, just BettaFix is geared towards smaller tanks/bowls).  That with the more frequent water changes should help and eventually it should heal up.  Let me know if it starts to appear worse though.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Christy
