Question
QUESTION: Hi Nathan,

I was wondering if Otocinclus would be suitable to my tank. I have a Top Fin 10-gallon tank, with a power filter and heating. I only have 4 fish in it, 4 neon tetras. Can I add one or two otocinclus?

Thank you

ANSWER: Hi James,

If you're a beginner (less than a year of experience), I would not recommend Otocinclus. They are known to die quite easily, because they are sensitive to water chemistry and quality. If you have an algae problem, snails would actually be a better idea.

Apple Snails are the most attractive ones out there, and they are quite popular.

However, if you feel that you're pretty good at fishkeeping, you can go right ahead with Otos. (I've kept them in small tanks without any problems). For your tank, you could fit 2 otocinclus without overstocking the tank.

Remember, they need food too, and sometimes the tank's algae is not enough. Buying a high-quality algae wafer like Hikari Algae Wafers is recommended.

Good Luck, and Happy Fishkeeping!

QUESTION: Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the previous answer. I just have two quick questions about the Otocinclus I purchased:

How much are the Hikari wafers you suggested?

How much and when should I feed them?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi James,

1)Hikari is considered by many to be one of the highest-quality commercially available food for fish. Because of this, it is a bit more expensive than your average food. The smallest size (which would be perfect for your tank) 20 grams, costs approximately $3-5. A larger size costs about $7.

2)Once a day is enough. There won't be any competition between the Neon Tetras and the food because Tetras are carnivores, and they do not eat vegetable matter. The Otos in turn, will not eat the Tetras' flakes. Otociclus, like most bottom feeders, are actually more active during the night, so I recommend feeding them before you turn off the light or after, before you go to bed.

Good Luck, and if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask me!
