Low Ph/ green water

Question
QUESTION: I have a tank with 4 baby mollies, and 1 adult female molly.  I have been doing minimal water changes (about 1-2 gal.) every two days (the reason for this is because of green water (algae), but up until today the ph level etc. have always been ok.  My ph level is at a 6.8 according to the pet store.  The pet store recommended some ph stablizer. (I do not like to add chemicals. I already made the mistake of adding some algae remover and now the side of my tank is clean, but my water is green.) Is there another way to stabilize the ph?  and how do I get rid of the green water?

ANSWER: How long has your tank been set up? I'm a big fan of Jungle Labs, No More Algae Tank Buddies which are available at any supply store. You can usually even find them at Walmart. There are many different types of Algae. Some grows on the sides of the tank, some on the plants and some just grows aimlessly in the water. Sounds like you are going through an Algae Bloom. I would change more than 1-2 gallons of water every 3-4 days. The first time, change as much as you can remove from the tank. After that 20-30% until the green water is cleared up. Once a week or so, vacuum the rocks really really well in an effort to get any algae that's hanging around in crevices. Don't stress too much, although Algae doesn't look very good, it's basically harmless to your fish :)
As far as the stabilizer goes I have to agree with the Pet Store and would recommend taking the easier (usually faster and more efficient) route and dump in some pH Stabilizer. Chemicals aren't a bad thing, as long as your using the right ones and not using more than directed :)

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: My tank has been set up for about 3 mo.
Originally I had 15-2mo old baby mollies and just about a month ago the mollie had more babies so total I had about 30 babies..a guppie and the female mollie and I had just added the algae remover and then I cleaned the tank and bam I lost all the new babies and most of the 2mo. old...The guppie died about 2wks ago. So that is partly why I am hesitant to add anything to my tank, plus my son was sooo upset when we lost the fish.  Anyway my follow up question is..What test kits would you recommend?  I have the strips right now, but would like something a little more accurate.

Thanks

Answer
The green water is most definately just part of the natural cycling process. If you don't want to do chemicals, you'll be fine to ride it out. Unfortunately until the tank is cycled, you may lose some fish. Just keep an eye out for any issues, the earlier they're caught.. the more treatable they usually are ;) Frequent water changes will definately make a difference. Once the cycle is complete you will see less of algae/fluctuations. That's not to say depending how much light your tank recieves you won't have the occassional outbreak :)
Test strips... I use Jungle Labs 5 Test in one strip. They don't test for ammonia. Most fish stores are happy to test your water for you. They're strips are usually pretty accurate. My favorite store actually uses the same  brand strips I use. There's test for a couple things more than mine do.
