betta vase mates?!?!

Question
I recently got a betta vase that i put a pothos plant in.  I have been feeding the fish once a day with betta pellets or freeze dried bloodworms, have been doing full or at least partial water changes every 3-4 days, been checking the roots for rotting everyday, and only filled the water to the widest point of the vase to give more surface area for air.  do you think that the setup is ok?  I have heard bad things about betta vases but it seems like it is mostly from irresponsiblity.  Also, I was wondering if a mystery snail could be added to the vase to help keep it clean? the vase holds a bit more than a gallon.  Thank you! :)

Answer
Hi Meagan,
You're right about the problem with bettas in vases being mostly due to irresponsibility and I must say you are doing a wonderful job with your betta setup!

The only potential problem might be a stressful temperature drop in the fall/winter time. Keeping him in a warm part of your house should help with this.

A mystery snail would be fine in your vase, he'd clean up algae, detritus and possibly nibble on decaying plant parts. But just remember he'll produce a lot of waste that means being extra careful about water quality. However, the Pothos plant should help a lot with that. Snails do require some feedings themselves and they enjoy some lettuce, Zucchini, and algae wafers every to every other day or so.

Thank you for taking the time to ask first and cheers for taking such excellent care of your betta! If only more people followed your path!

Have a good weekend!
Karen~
