my poor black moor...

Question
my poor black moor's skin around both of his eyes is peeling off leaving silver behind.  What is wrong with him?

Answer
Hi Nicole,
It could be a water quality problem. His tank may be polluted. Goldfish in general are very dirty fish that need plenty of large water changes to remain healthy. The smaller the container the Black moor is in, the more frequent and larger water changes he needs. Anything smaller than a 10-gallon would be best off with 50% or larger water change every to every other day. Smaller than 5-gallons and every day close to 100% water change is essential.

Goldfish really do best in at least a 10-20 gallon or larger to be healthy longterm. But for your poor black moor I think I would start doing daily 50% water changes on his tank which may help. And observe him for any other symptoms. It also would be great if you could test his water for ammonia and nitrites and nitrates. These levels should be as follows- Ammonia-0 Nitrite-0 Nitrate- 20 or less for fish to be healthy.

I really hope this helps!
Best of luck with the black moor!
Karen~
