Answer
Hi Chris B;

I'm so glad you could save their lives! They are a type of barb, probably a yellow-fin. You can do a search on the net for them as "Barbus daruphani". Yours don't look the same as the profile pics right now because they were so badly neglected and are thin. Feed them 3 times a day, a good quality pellet or flake food, depending on how big their mouths are. Don't overfeed, making sure all food is gone from all areas of the tank in less than about 3 minutes.

They are tropicals, so a stable temperature range between 76f to 80f is just fine for them. They grow to be over 8 inches long usually, sometimes up to a foot long. They need lots of room, about 100 gallons. However, it is possible yours won't grow much after their traumatic experience. Sometimes fish are permanently "stunted" after such a thing. Hopefully they will be healthy though and still live a good long life.

The good news is you don't have to do anything special with their water. just regular tap water, using a good water conditioner. For all of our pet fish we don't need to make adjustments and it can be dangerous to try. It usually ends up being a water chemistry roller coaster ride for them that is very stressful, even more than being in water that we think "isn't quite right" . What we want is consistent water chemistry, not a certain reading from a chart. They become accustomed to what our tap water is and do just fine, even breeding in water that we are told they shouldn't be able to thrive in. This is mostly because the fish we buy have never seen their native waters so they don't need the conditions as their ancestors lived. They are raised in commercial breeding ponds in all the same water as other breeds. Another reason for pet fishes' hardiness in all water chemistry is that they really aren't as "needy" as experts once thought. Fish are very adaptable and it's actually harder on them to try to change it to "suit the species".

So, I hope they do great and have a long happy life with you, their new friend!
