Fresh water fish issues

Question
I have 2 lionhead gold fish in an 10 gallon tank. I do weekly water changes., about 5 gallons or so. I use Tetra Aquasafe to make the tap water safe and i use Tetra easybalance to keep the PH safe. When i dod my water change I use API Aquarium Salt to reduce the stress. This last change was a full take change because the fish look dazed and were swimming around with their mouths open all day, one even started to swim upsidedown. I panic and changed all the water. No the tank looks nice a clean but the fish are still swimming around with gapping mouths like they aren't getting oxygen. I'm afraid for them but i don't know what else to do. Is it possible i have to many bubbles in the tank.

Answer
HiYa!

Ok unless they are swimming VERY close to the surface and looking like they are gasping for air, there may not be anything wrong. Usually when goldfish are struggling for air, they stick very close to the surface. Sometimes goldfish do just swim around with their mouths open and there is nothing wrong with them.

Word of cautionary advice, NEVER do a 100% water change. When you do this you are basically making your tank start a cycle all over again because you are not only taking out all the water in your tank but your taking out all the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, bacteria etc. At most do a 50% water change, this way at least you are keeping 50% of the water in your tank and not putting the tank through too much of a stress.

As far as I am aware, you can't have too many bubbles in your tank but if you are concerned, then maybe remove one of your airstones, as long as there are some bubbles providing surface agitation you will be fine!

Hope this helps!

Cheers! Rach
