Cloudy water/to many fish?

Question
QUESTION: Hello Chris I have recently purchased a Top Fin 28 gal. Bow front starter kit aquarium. I have had the tank about 6 weeks. And I have 5 small tiger barbs, 2 black mollys, 1 catfish, 1 green tint Barb, 2 gouramies. Probably too many fish too soon. So it's probably no surprise that I have a cloudy water issue. I think I may have interrupted the water cycle. The water was smelling and the filter was way green. So I changed the filter the water cleared up for awhile but has since clouded up again. but doesn't smell. I also have been adding cycle bacteria to help with breaking in the new tank. I have no live plants or coral. I cleaned the gravel really good too. So the cloudy water I think is due to too many fish to fast. All water test's say everything is good. I'm not sure if the tank has even spiked and gone through the water cycle so what do you think?
ANSWER: Mark-
This is actually a great setup.  I'd like to specifically know two things before I can completely answer this question.  What are the exact readings of your test kit?  pH? Nitrates? Nitrites?  Ammonia?  I can tell you that hazy/cloudy water is not always a sign of poor biological filtration, but not enough mechanical filtration.  If the numbers are all within acceptable ranges, then the answer is simply to increase the power of your filter.  The Top Fin series comes with Tetra Whisper filters.  You're setup comes with a Tetra 30.  I'd recommend adding to that setup an in-tank Whisper i20 at a minimum.  In my 29 gallon tank, I've got a Eclipse 3 filter with a Fluval 3+ in it.  All said and done, my tank will cycle the water 14x in an hour.  I'd recommend the same for you.  It should take about 2 weeks for it to clear up this way.  Since your fish aren't dying, I'd have to lean towards just not getting cleaned fast enough (mechanical filtration), but not harmful.  Have no fear, I'd up the filtration, either by getting a bigger filter (Whisper 60) or adding a second in tank filter.  Good luck.  Ask me again when you get those numbers!

QUESTION: Hello Chris you sound like your very knowledgeable. Thank you for your help. Yes I do have the whisper 30 pump.
And here are the readings
pH 7.4, Nitrates 20, Nitrites .5, Hardness 75, Alkalinity 80, Ammonia .02

Answer

Your numbers are within the acceptable ranges.  Spend the $20 and get the second filter.  It'll clear up in about 2 weeks.  Your fish are fine.  The haziness is purely from excess particles in the tank that your filter can clear out fast enough before more show up.  If you wait long enough, the tank will eventually clear up on its own, but for a small amount of cash, you can clear up the tank, and make it much more enjoyable to look at.  Good luck.
