Baby mollies

Question
Hi. I purchased a dalmatian molly and two platys on a Saturday and Wednesday I noticed 3 babies.I believe they are Mollies because the one I purchased is now a little thinner. (I asked the pet store for all males) I read up on frys and I bought a holding tank for them. Upon doing that 5 more decided to come out of hiding. So that makes 8. I have read on what to feed them and am doing that.  I did not want babies but I am going to try to raise them. I have no idea what colors they are going to be but the tank I bought the molly from were all Dalmatian Mollies. My question is this.
They will procreate even though they are from the same batch right? This sounds horrible but after this batch I do not want anymore babies. Should I give these ones to a petstore when they get older? I don't mind keeping at least two of the babies if they are females (don't want a repeat performance) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Tanya

Answer
Hi Tanya, Baby fish are so great but they sure are trouble when they get out of hand as livebearers often do.

Its true the babies you have now once they are about a couple months old and sometimes even younger will start to breed and will definitely inbreed too.
The keys are waiting and watching the fry until the males "Gonopodium" or modified fin he uses to mate with females develops and when you spot that then separate then quickly from the females if at all possible.

Most petstores will gladly take healthy fish and sometimes you'll get lucky enough to get a little money from them but don't always count on it. ;)

I've been experienced through my own episode of molly breeding getting out of hand. They just never stop it seems and while I do love my fish and adore the little babies, its not any fun anymore when the tank is completely overpopulated and fish are suffering from it too.

Best wishes and I hope this helps!
