parasites in my tank?

Question
I have a 5 gallon octagonal tank with a few fantail goldfish in it. Recently I saw a small critter swimming in my tank, it swam by and clinged onto a fake plant. It was VERY small, was a tanish color and had 3 legs on each side of its body. It also had 2 beaty black eyes. It almost looked like a mosquito or dragon fly larvae. Could you tell me if this is a danger to my fish, if it will multiply, and how to get rid of it if I need to? Please help, I LOVE my fish and this whole parasite thing is really creeping me out, thanks! --- Cote

Answer
Hello,

As a protective measure, I recommend treating your aquarium with a product called Coppersafe. It kills parasites and protects your tank from them for a full month after treatment. If this little critter is a parasite, Coppersafe should eradicate him as well as any eggs/young that are in the tank.

I hope this helps.
