Question
hi i have a 40 litre tropical tank with 4 neons 2 guppies and 2 platies ihave my light on for six hours a day at the moment id have it on longer but the fish seem to lose there colour and sit on the bottam looking ill but nexdt day there all fine and healthy swiming around can you help me with this ?

Answer
This is a question that has been debated for some time.  Its been argued that dark setups, with dim lighting, bring out the color in fish, because they attempt to get darker to camouflage themselves.  It is possible that with the lights on, they're simply bleaching their color to hide if you will.  I also notice that you've only got 4 neons.  Neons are schooling fish, and much prefer 8 or more.  When singular, they can be known to become more stressed.  Platies have also been known to be bullies.  My suggestion would be to not stress about the lighting, but instead add some more decor to the tank.  Give the fish more places to hide, so they feel more secure.  Also, add some friends for the neons.  That should help a lot.  Good luck
