Question
QUESTION: Hi Michael,
I have a freshwater tank with a variety of fish inhabitants. The water here is very hard so we just installed a water softener. I regularly use stress coat, Chlor Out and Bullseye 7.0 when I do water changes, but I don't know anything about the water softener-ed water being used for my tank. Is it safe to use, or is there another chemical I will need. I imagine it would make the water almost brackish because of the salt content, but I'm just not sure.
Thank you for your help,
Christina

ANSWER: christina,
is it a ion softener or a salt based?
I would test the salinity and if its too high, I would cut it with spring water, or, get faucet filter, like a britta to remove the salts.

QUESTION: It's a salt softener. Is there a "salinity" test kit I can buy from the pet store?

Answer
as a matter of fact Christina, you should be able to get one from your shop, in lieu of that a local agway or such that sells softeners should have tests available.
If you look a bit you should be able to locate what you are looking for.
