Freshwater plants and aquarium salt

Question
Hi.  I just got a 10 gallon fish tank for Valentine's Day, and I have 2 mollies, a platy, a tiger barb, a catfish bottom feeder type, and 3 live plants.
The guy at the pet store told me to add salt to my tank... but upon recent research, apparently it could be bad for not only my tiger barb but also my plants!  I cherish my plants and I hope nothing bad will happen!  I didn't add a whole lot.  Is this bad for my tank?

Answer
Hi Jennifer:  aquarium salt is ok for your tank... I don't use it a whole lot...except as a treatment for illness. Add a bit during your water changes but for the most part keep the salt to a minimum.  It is not great for plants and if you use salt as a treatment for fish disease you will need to either remove the plants or the fish because salt at that level will kill your plants.  So in short... if you don't need it don't use it... I hope this helps... dave
