Sick Danios

Question
Hi Susan,
I have 7 red and mix Danios in my 8 gallon tank. They have been living there over a year without any problem, but recently 3 of them are bit wired, their tail part (right after stomach till the rear fin) has become thing and crooked. And it seems like its hard for them to move around.
Appreciate if you could find a remedy.
Thank you,
Numark.

Answer
Hi Numark!
I'm sorry to hear about your Danios.

I have experienced such a situation myself with danios and similar species. The crooked appearance to their tail is unfortunately a common old age symptom. Some individual fish are more prone to it than others. Danios have a lifespan of a few years and you may have some fish that were already a few years old when you bought them.

Another possible cause for the crooked tails is a vitamin deficiency. Sometimes a lack of vitamin C can trigger physical deformities.

Just make sure you are feeding a varied diet of frozen foods ideally with a staple flake food high in vitamins.

Some fish are sadly just unlucky in this way that something goes wrong with their systems that causes the crooked shape. There really isn't a remedy and the best thing to do is continue to care for them in the best way possible, plenty of water changes and a good diet.

I hope this helps and best of luck!
Susan~
