Question
Madam/sir, i rearing zebra fishes in my lab. but they are suffering from velvet disease.i want know that what is treatment for velvet disease? and one more whether they get ammonia toxicity in future days?

Answer
Hi, velvet disease is a small protozoan creature called Oodinium. It also contains anglae & chlorophyll. Is is both an animal and a plant. It gets into the fish tissues and uses the nutrients in the fishes cells. Symptoms are: the fish rubbing against objects, lethargy, loss of appetite and closed fins.
Treatment:
Raise the water temp to 82
Treat with copper sulfate as directed by the manufacturer. A full 10 day treatment is needed.
Lower the light level. This is a creature that has algae in its make up. The Algae is dependent on light. LOwer the light will remove the Algae inside the Oodinium. Turning off the light all together is even better.
     Add some salt.
Discontinue carbon filtration. carbon will remove the medication before it has a change to work.

Ammonia in the tank will itself kill the fish. Prior to that itr will stress the fish making it more easily affected by diseases like velvet. Add "Ammonia removing chips" in the filtration process. Use it always. Ammonia will be removed.
