Betta Fish losing fins

Question
I have a Betta that I have had for 1 year and it has lost most of its fins. It still eats good but it does not look like a Betta anymore. What could be wrong and what should I do?  It is in a 3/4 gal. vase with a plant in it and I change the water weekly. We use tap water that is filtered. I have never tested the water chemistry. I feed it Beta fish food once a day.  Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hi Monica;

He may be tearing his fins on the plant. He also an old guy now. They live to be 2-3 years old and he was close to a year when you bought him. You might consider removing the plant or putting him in another tank to see if he can grow those fin back at his age. Some bettas even bite their own tails. Weird, but true! Fins can grow back, but not in their former glory. They will be smaller and less colorful. As long as he is healthy, that's what is really important.
