Beta fish and well water

Question
I was wondering if well water is ok to use for my beta fish? I did buy some drops to put in regular water to dechlorinate it and make it safe for betas but I'm not sure if I would need to use it for well water or if I'm fine without it.

Answer
Good evening Jessica, thank you for your question.

Hmm, the question is - does your water have detectable chlorine in it? It depends on who manages your well. Many wells do have sanitizer added to them. I would continue to use the dechlorinator, Prime is my choice. Super simple dosing - 3 drops per gallon - and the fact it can neutralize ammonia and nitrite in a pinch, are my reasons for this.

If you are not certain whether your well water has chlorine in it, get a chlorine test kit from a pool supply store, or even a chain hardware store. I suspect it does and would continue to use dechlorinator, but test it just in case.

Good luck to you,
Nicole
