Question
QUESTION: Please help! I am so concerned for my 4 year old fancytail.  He's in a 10 gallon tank and by himself. He has a big whitish colored growth on his side and it is only getting bigger! The fish is eating fine however, he does stay still for long periods of time, but overall he seems to be alright.  I added a fungus tablet to his water which didn't do anything.  I have a pic I can send you if you like.  Any advice you could give me would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

ANSWER: Hi Desiree:
From what you say, I think that your fancytail has a thyroid tumor. There is no treatment for this, but it could be totally different if what I see is different from what I read. Please send me the picture along with your follow-up so I can research this case further.

QUESTION: Hello Jenny,
Here is a pic...I have more, but I wanted you to see a side profile picture...let me know if you want to see more.  Thank you so much for your help.

Answer
Hi Desiree:
Yes, this is definitely a tumor. It's quite harmless from what it looks like, but there is no treatment. If you have an open cut on your hand, DO NOT put your hand inside the tank, because some goldfish can carry Tuberculosis in their tumors, and you can contract it from the tumor fluids in the water. Spend a lot of time with your goldfish now, because it might not last long. The goldfish's tumor will only grow larger, then preventing the goldfish from being able to swim aka not being able to eat. It will then starve. I am so sorry. The next step in my advice is that if you really want your goldfish to survive, consult a vet and have it surgically removed. I am so sorry------
Good Luck-
Sincerely,
Jenny
