Betta has colored lumps and fins are curling

Question
I have had my betta for almost 6 months.  I am diligent about the 25% water change once a week. He lives in a 5 gallon tank (alone) and has a silk plant and a small pot (for fish) to play in.  Just the last week I have noticed that my betta's fins are curling a bit and there are 2 small blue colored lumps/bumps (he is blue) on his fins.  What could be causing this?  My betta still eats twice daily and swims.  I just hate that I could be doing something wrong. I appreciate any info.  Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Mo;

Curling fins in bettas is often a genetic trait. Professional breeders try to breed this out of their strains but male bettas don't usually develop it until they are very mature and their fins become very long. By that time they have already used them for breeding. It can also be a sign of chronically elevated ammonia. Test for it just to be sure. Your tank is big enough though so unless there is a lot of excess waste in the tank from overfeeding I don't think that's the problem.

Regardless of the cause, the curling is permanent. The bumps are probably just lumps of fin that are clumped together from the curling. If they were infected or something they would be reddish, whitish or greyish.
