Hello  My name is Twyla and I have a 9 inch Oscar.  He is in a 33 Gallon tank and I am not sure of the chemical levels.  Recently he has developed a problem with his eyes.  They have a pinky ring around the color part and the muscle on the outside of it looks white.  They don't appear swollen and his attidute hasn't changed much.  It just doesn't look right and I am worried about him ALOT.  I would appriecate any help you could provide in finding out the source and how to treat him.  I have pictures but I am not sure how to post them.  Thank you very much

Hi Twyla,
Are there any other fish in the tank with the oscar?

Hi Twyla,
Eye problems are usually caused by one of two things: either another fish is biting him (which doesn't seem likely in this case) or problems with the water.  Because oscars eat alot and produce a lot of waste, they need regular water changes to keep them healthy in the long term.  You need to be changing 25% of his water EVERY week (in addition to having good filtration on the tank).

Have you been doing these sorts of water changes?

Hi Yes I clean the rocks with a cleaning tube once a week and change out the water every two weeks.  I just purchased a better filtration system about week ago and it has improved his behavour a lot.  I read on a page about pop eye and was wonder if that could be what is causing his eye to look blood shot.  Other then his eye he seems to be acting normal.  I am sorry to be bugging you so quickly and often I am just very attacted to him.  Thank you for your patience.

Answer
Hi Twyla,
Popeye isn't so much a disease as a symptom.  Lots of things can cause popeye.

When you say that you "change out the water" do you mean that you change ALL the water?   That is not a good idea.  It would be much better to change part of the water twice as often as all of the water less often.
