Guppy - Cory salt tolerance

Question
I have a 90 litre freshwater tank pH 7.4 temp 24c which contains 8 male guppies and 6 freshwater shrimp (Caridina Japonica).  I add aquarium salt 1tsp per gallon, and would like to add 4 small cory cats to complete the set-up. However, I don't wish to place the corys under undue stress because of the salt.  Is there specific cory breeds that can be safely kept in this aquarium, or can I reduce the amount of sodium to suit both types of fish?  Help please!

Answer
Hi Debbie;

I don't recall any that are 'more' tolerant, but I do know that pandas are 'less' tolerant. You could try a concentration of 1/2 teaspoon per gallon for the guppies and see how they do. I've used that dose with cories and they have been just fine. Just do a couple of 25% water changes without adding any salt. Guppies need very clean water anyway so there should be a 25% water change at least once a week for good health and vitality.

There are many experts who disagree with me on the salt dosage for cory cats, but I have had no trouble with the 1/2 tsp per gallon dosage with mine. If your guppies are used to a higher dose they might not do well. Before adding cories, watch and see how the guppies do over a period of a week or two.
