algae in tanks

Question
We have 2 tanks.  Never had a algae problem with the 29 gal one, but the 46 gal has always had a bad problem.  Could a change in lights bulbs help?

Answer
Hi Cheryl;

Different bulbs could help if they are pretty bright. Maybe shorter hours of light too. Every tank has its differences of chemistry too. They each have different fish, gravel, natural light exposure, etc. More organic nutrients in the way of food and more light will cause higher algae production. Change water more often to reduce wastes when algae seems to be at it's worst. A normal maintenance schedule is a weekly 25% change and a gravel vacuuming every week to two weeks.

Live plants help too if you don't have fish that will destroy them. The plants will "shade out" the algae and will more readily consume the nutrients causing algae to thrive.
