What sex are my Jack Dempseys?

Question

Jack Dempseys
Good morning MR. Coleman.  I have a couple of Jack Dempseys and am trying to figure out what sex they are.  I have read all over the Internet that the females have way more spangling on their gill plates but I have also seen many photos where the males do.  I have attached photos of the two and hope you can help me identify their sex.  If you look at the larger blue Dempsey it has the very pointy dorsal and anal fins but it also has the striations on the gills and cheek.  The yellow Dempsey has very little to no striation but doesn't have the pointed fins.  I hope you can help me.  Thank you in advance!  I have more photos I can send but this will only let me upload 1, so if you need better or more pictures please let me know and I will e-mail you them.  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Tim,
Jack Dempseys are one of those cichlids where males and females look a lot alike.  Females carry their weight more in the belly than do males.  The pointiness of the fins doesn't mean anything in most cases and I wouldn't much faith in the spangles either.  There is tons of
variation in both these characters.

Do they fight with each other?

Please send more photos to my address below and that might help.
