Sick Betta has now died

Question
I just sent you a question re my sick Betta but too late - he has just died. I thought the way he was twisting and spinning round that he couldn't last. It was a shame as he survived flukes and fungus only to be brought down by eating his food too fast.
So now I am worried about my other Bettas and their food. I don't feed pellets since a young Betta got one stuck in its throat and died. Now I give VitaPet Betta Food which are fine granules but should I presoak them 'cos they will clump and be hard to dish out separately to each fish? Also how much should I give? At present they get a tiny pinch each morning and maybe again later if they seem hungry still.
I have managed to breed Bettas twice now but they don't grow fast - this spawning of 5 survivors is 10 months old and only 3 to 5 cm long. They used to get frozen baby brine shrimp and my local aquatic centre's own dried food. Now they get the same as the others. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Lynda;

I'm so sorry you lost him. Sometimes in spite of our best efforts there's just nothing you can do.

For baby fish to grow fast they need live, chopped or frozen whole foods (brine shrimp, frozen mosquito larvae, daphnia, chopped earthworms, tubifex, etc). They also need very frequent water changes, warm temperatures and not to be overcrowded. Professional breeders will change water daily.

Each fish should have one or two feedings each day. Each serving should be no bigger than the fishes' eye. Their stomachs are about the size of one of their own eyes and you don't want to overfeed them.
