Malachite Green

Question
Hello,
I currently have a 38 gallon fresh water tank with a variety of fish in it. One of
them however has become sick. I bought a pair of very small cichlid's (I'm so
sorry, but I can't remember their full name. They are black and orange, with
most of the orange on the tail) and the other one seems to  be doing fine, but
this other one is not. When he first started to seem ill, I noticed he would lay
low on the gravel, and be shy. Little or no interest in food, when he used to be
full of life. Then, just the other day, I noticed his skin has turn very dark grey
and dull, and there is a slight cloudyness to his eyes. Yesterday and today he
has been hiding all the time, never comes out. I had a bottle of malachite
green in my supplies, and started by doing a 25% water change, and treating
the tank with about 3 teaspoons of the malachite green yesterday. (I read
online that you should remove the activated carbon from the filter when
medicating. I have an aquaclear 50, so I removed the carbon insert) I have
seen no improvement today. I plan on doing another 25% water change, and
another dose of the malachite. Do you have any suggestions on what else I
could do? Or maybe a possibly diagnosis? Or an alternative way for me to use
the malachite green? I'm fairly new to this! Let me know if I can provide you
more information! Thanks in advance!

Answer
Dear Ash,
When a fish is sick in a community tank it is best that you take the sick fish out of the tank & put him in the "Hospital". The Hospital is a tank w/ the sick fish all by himself. One that you can medicate. You do not want to get your healthy fish sick. Once you have seperated the sick fish from the others try adding ick away, or anything w/ the word "ick" in the title to the tank. It worked for me when one of my fish had the same symptoms you described. Also try adding Melafix to the "hospital".Thank you for contacting me.
