Question
I have 5 common goldfish, the sizes range but not by much. The biggest one's fin is torn, not sure if its from the pet store, one of the smaller fish started to bite the fish. Now it bites it much frfequent esp in the face. So I noticed when im feedin them, the bigger one sits on the bottom an waits for the food, also he sits at the top of the tank whole day.. in one spot. TOday I took out my goldfish, i dont have another tank but i didnt want him to die. So I put it in a bucket... but i realised that he was jumpin out.. an I couldnt stop him so I put him back into the aquarium... and now he gets beaten still but by the original biter and another one. I want a divider but i'll try to get one soon. but what do I do in the meantime.?>. I dont want my fish to die. thanks in advance.

Answer
Ashley,

It is very important that you get that fish out asap. Keep the water level low enough so that he can't jump out. If he does, put some kind of lid on it. They are trying to get the pecking order and that is why he is being picked on, but if you keep him in the tank they will kill him. They also might be doing it because the tank size is not right. With 5 goldfish, they need to be in nothing less than a 60 gallon tank. 20 gallons for the first fish and 10 gallon per fish being added. If they are in a tank that is too small the fighting will continue until no fish is alive. I hope that all is ok now and if you have any more questions let me know.
