white fantail pigeon

Question
I have recently gotten a very pretty white fantail. I just want to know if its behaviors are normal. The man i got it from has had it since it was a baby. It seems very attached to humans. Whenever i am outside it demands to be on my head or on me. Is this normal for a domestic pigeon? It also will never leave the house, i assume this is because it is being fed here? Is it ok if i don't keep it in a cage during the day but at night i keep it in one to protect from predators? During the day it just sits on its very high perch on my porch, and i guess that i think it is safe there. Is it? thanks allot for your time!

Answer
Hi Evan,

Pigeons can most certainly become attached to people, especially if she/he sees you as its mate. That is the reason why it always wants to be with you and why it never leaves and also because it has a source of food. I do not really see anything wrong with letting it out during the day. Just make sure predators cannot get to it, such as birds of prey and cats. Realize too that the pigeon may wonder away from home one day and get lost. Fantails don't have a great homing ability and it might be lost forever. Locking it up at night is a great idea. I hope this helps!

Thanks,
Stacie
